Dermatology Now Part of Umbrella of Services
Joseph English III, MD, board-certified medical dermatologist, is seeing patients at the Lupus Center of Excellence, located on the first floor at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC.

Dr. English dedicates a portion of his time exclusively to the study and care of patients with dermatologic manifestations of lupus and other autoimmune and connective tissue diseases. Dermatology joins the menu the multidisciplinary services available in one location for patients with autoimmune disorders. In addition to core rheumatology services, the Lupus Center also offers access to cardiologists, endocrinologists, neurologists, nephrologists, and pain management specialists in its outpatient practice.

Dr. English, an associate professor of Medicine in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Department of Dermatology, is on staff at both Magee and UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside. He sees patients with autoimmune and connective tissue disorders on Monday mornings. To request a consult with Dr. English, call 412-641-7600.

Savor Pittsburgh Proves to Be Scrumptious!
A collection of Pittsburgh's finest chefs came together on Sept. 3, 2008, to share their favorite recipes in an all-out competition for coveted "Best Dish" honors at the third annual Savor Pittsburgh: A Celebration of Cuisine.

The event blended a scrumptious menu, cocktails, live music, dancing, and a silent auction to benefit the Lupus Center of Excellence. An elegant outdoor atmosphere at SouthSide Works set the backdrop for the evening. More than 500 guests tasted the flavor of philanthropy when they sampled food and drink from Pittsburgh's finest, all while supporting lupus research.

The event was presented by the Foundation for the Lupus Center of Excellence, McCormick & Schmick's Seafood Restaurant, and SouthSide Works. Visit www.savorpgh.com for details.

Patients Go Behind the Scenes in Unique Patient Open House Event
Nearly 100 lupus patients and their loved ones visited the Thomas E. Starzl Biomedical Science Tower (BST) on May 10 -- World Lupus Day 2008 -- for Lupus: Behind the Scenes, a unique patient open house event that offered attendees a new perspective on research and patient care.

The day was hosted by the Lupus Center of Excellence, which has a patient care facility within Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC but bases its research functions at the BST. In addition to education seminars about how lupus affects the family and practical nutrition and exercise tips to manage symptoms, families were updated on current developments in lupus research. The cornerstone of the day was a series of behind-the-scenes lab tours during which patients learned the path their blood samples take in the diagnosis and research processes.

The Lupus Center of Excellence plans to build on this inaugural event by offering it annually for lupus patients and their families. Watch for details coming soon about the 2009 event.
