Lupus Awareness Program
What is it?
This novel program sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, introduces middle and high school students to the scientific, medical, and societal aspects of systemic lupus erythematosus. Community organizations and support groups are also welcome to participate.
In a typical 3-hour session, students participate in the following:
An introduction describing careers as physicians and scientists, a presentation explaining immunology, autoimmune diseases, and lupus, an interactive interview with patients who discuss the impact of lupus on their own lives and the lives of their families, evaluation of clinical and laboratory results of three fictitious patients being evaluated for lupus, rotation through three laboratory stations where they perform hands-on techniques actually used by the researchers at the Center, exposure to the difficulties and complexities faced by actual physicians in arriving at an accurate diagnosis
